Battle’s Over – Beacon Lighting
On the evening of Sunday, November 11th 2018, the village’s residents will join the Nation in celebrating the “Battle’s Over” event with the lighting of beacons across the country including one at Waddesdon. Everyone is invited to gather at the Children’s Centre car park down Frederick Street at 6.30pm.
Sunday 11th November Timings:
- 6.55pm Battle’s Over
A bugler will play the ‘Last Post’ like at many of the 1,000 beacon sites throughout the United Kingdom, involving young people and others paying their personal tribute to those who gave their lives during World War I. - 7.00pm Battle’s Over – WWI Beacons of Light
As darkness falls, the beacon will be lit along with more than 1,000 beacons throughout the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, with the first of these beacons being lit by Her Majesty the Queen at Westminster Abbey, London. - 7.05pm Battle’s Over – Ringing out for peace!
Sadly, St Michael’s Church is under repair so in the absence of bells Waddesdon is going to fire a 21 rocket salute, timed to coincide in celebration of the end of the First World War. - 7.20pm The evening will come to a close with hot and cold refreshments and snacks. It will be great to see as many people as possible attend this poignant event.
100 years ago the First World War ended, and a new world began. The example and experience of those who lived through it shaped the world we live in today. On 11 November 2018, the United Kingdom and its friends overseas will mark the centenary of the day when the guns fell silent.
